Choose one of the following and respond. Be sure to respons to all of the questions.

(1) If you have seen the movie for the book you are reading, comment on what you think so far. If the book different? Better? Which do you like the best? Why? Why do we usually feel that books are better than movies?

or

(2)Do you like poetry? Why or why not? Do you read poetry outside of school? Do you write poetry? If so, what do you like about writing it? Why do you think poetry is the least appealing genre for most young adults? Poetry used to be very highly regarded among most people--men wrote poems for the women they loved--why has that changed? Or are you a guy who writes poems or a girl who has been lucky enough to receive one?

  1. (1) I am reading "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" at the moment. I really like the book so far, it's real memorizing. I haven't seen the movie but I heard it's like the book, and if it'd like the book then I know I will love the movie.

  2. Im reading the book Shutter Island. I have already seen the movie and so far the book is pretty similar to the movie, only the book is better. I think we usually like the books better than the movies because it gives more details and is more entertaining.

  3. (1) I am currently reading the book "Dear John" for this class. I haven't seen the movie for it yet, but I've heard it's really good. The book has been good so far, and I can't wait to finish it and the movie. I think we usually think that books are better than the movie because the books give more details about the thoughts and personalities of the characters.

  4. 1. I am reading Dear John. I have seen the movie, and so far the book and the movie are pretty similar. So far I like the book better because it goes more into detail that the movie does. I think people generally like watching movies better because of the fact that it does not take much effort to watch a movie. It is very easy to go and watch a movie, rather than read a book.

  5. 1. I am gong to read the book Dear John. I have seen the movie, but not yet started the book. I plan on starting it after the AP book is due. But I do know that this book is going to be very interesting, and I am very excited. :)

    2. I like certain types of poetry. I like poetry when I can understand it, but not when its diction I don't understand. I do not read poetry outside of school, I wouldn't have the patience for it. When I was younger I did try to write poetry but as the years went on it became more difficult. I think people of my generation don't like poetry because we cannot relate to the diction the older poets used. The times have changed so therefor the way guys relate to girls will change to.

  6. 1. I am reading Angles and Demon and I have seen the movie. The movie and the book share pretty much the same story line but the book has a little bit more detail in it that the movie.

    2. I hate poetry. I don't understand it, I don't read it out of class, and its to confusing. Its like a story but they had to write it in a different way with rhymes.

  7. (2) I personally do not like poetry. I don't like it because I don't understand it. I have never read poetry outside of school. I definitely do not write poetry. It is the least appealing because it is the most difficult. It has changed because times have changed and people don't talk like that anymore. They just get their point across and that's the end of it. I have never received one and thats probably a good thing because if a guy wrote me a poem I would probably be weirded out majorly. Haha

  8. (1) the book I'm reading is facing the giants and its also a movie there both the same but the book has more information than the movie but the movie is a little more intreating but the book can tell a lot more than it than the movie

  9. 2) I do not like poetry because poems are so cryptic. I don't understand why they can't just say you are pretty, they have to say you are like the sun. Its so annoying. I do not read or write poetry because I think its annoying and hard. I have never had a poem written to me and hope that if a boy wants to tell me how pretty I am that he just say it. Times have changes and people don't have time to try to solve the puzzle of the poem, we just want to be told directly how you feel about something.

  10. 2) Poetry is okay. I don't like it, I don't hate it. I just haven't really been exposed to very much poetry is probably why I'm indifferent to it. I don't write poetry. I think that the reason why poetry is dreaded is because of the time changing. Most poems we study were written a long time ago and they're hard to understand. I think that's why it's not as popular as it once was.

Response: I'm responding to Kiaya's statement. I agree with her. Poems can be very cryptic and hard to understand. When I read something I like to be able to understand it pretty easily. I hate having to dig and dig for little bits and pieces of a poem to understand them better.

  11. 1) I am reading the book I Know What You Did Last Summer, and it is quite different from the movie. The book goes into more of the background story and how each person feels. The movie kinda changes some important details from the book, but personally I like the book better.

  12. I'm reading "Of Mice and Men" I've seen the movie already and for the most part it's the same, there are some really little stuff that is different though. I like both of them

  13. Dear Kiaya,
I really like ur post! I feel exactly the same way. If a guy thinks your pretty then he should just say it.

  14. 2) I'm sorry but I hhhaaatttteeee poetry with an un-dieing passion of a 1,000 fiery suns....seriously i hate it. I think it's just a way to beat around the bush of what you are actually trying to say. I don't read poetry outside of class unless it is in the book I am reading. And if you didn't notice by the poem I wrote about Peanut Butter, I obviously do not write poetry either. I think it has changed because people got tired of figuring out metaphors to describe how beautiful a girl looks. That's why it isn't regarded as highly today because people will say what they need to in 2 or 3 sentences. =)

  15. I also agree with what Kiaya stated about the whole poetry thing. Poems like to drag it out about all this none sense instead of just being blunt and and open about it.

  17. I am reading of "Mice and Men" I have watched the book and read the book both. I feel like they are pretty much alike. There are some things in the movie that are different from the book that I didn't like, but over all both are very good.

I totally agree poetry is just a way to beat around the bush.

  19. 2) I think poetry is okay. It's definitely not my favorite thing to read. I don't read poetry or write poems outside of class. Poetry is the least appealing to young adults because most poetry is so difficult to understand. If you give a teenager, who doesn't read a lot of poetry, a sonnet by Shakespeare they will look at you like you are a goon. They will have no idea what it says or really means. I think that we are of a modern era. Us girls, like Kiaya said, if a guy thinks we are pretty we want to hear them say it. Although if i got a sweet poem from a guy I wouldn't complain.

  20. 1) The book I've been reading is Misery by Stephen King. I've only seen part of the movie so I can't really tell many differences yet. One major difference I've noticed is that in the book, Annie never broke Paul's legs. From what I've seen of the movie, I like the book much better. The book has so much detail and really lets you use your imagination more while the movie only gives you one perception of what's going on. I think that's the reason that people think books are better then movies.

  21. 1) I am reading Pride and Prejudice. I loved the movie, but I think that the book is much better so far. I think books are better because there is more detail and you get to use your imagination to create the scene rather than watch someone else's interpretation of the scene.

  22. I am reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I have seen the movie and they are mostly the same but there are some differences but nothing major. I liked both the book and the movie. This is probably one of the only times I have ever liked the movie a little bit better but I think its because the book is written more towards younger kids. The movie is too, but like I said its a little different in the small details. It was just better to watch than read because the book is written like a diary (of a wimpy kid of course). You only know what happened according to the writer of the diary and its all only his opinion. In the movie you actually see what happens and can interpret it differently.I don't really know how else to explain it, but both of them were good, not necessarily young adult, but I enjoyed them.

  23. I am reading Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane. So far the story is weird, A woman disappears from a locked room with guards everywhere and escapes onto an island, and no one can find her. when the Marshal Teddy Daniels and his new partner chuck aule get to shutter island they start asking around and no one will give them straight answers. Which is driving them to look to other places for answers, places where the warden does not want them looking.

  24. 2) I like poetry when it is easy to understand. I like to be able to read it through once and understand what the poet is trying to say. I don't like when I have to pick a poem apart to understand what is being said, I like it to be to the point. I rarely like to write poetry. I only like to write poetry when I am extremely happy or sad about something, and most of the time it isn't very good.
I think poetry is the least liked genre because most poetry is difficult to understand. Young adults like straight, easy, and to the point. I can't remember ever being given a poem, but I would be flattered if a guy were to write one for me. I like when guys go out of their way to tell the girl he likes just how he feels about her.

  25. I hate poetry, so what if it has more meaning. In my opinion it takes too long to read, it's too complex for me to care about it, I shouldn't have to stare at something for 20 minutes to try and get the whole reason of writing the poem. I don't write poems, and doubt I ever will unless I have to. I think teens now just want to be told how someone feels about them, instead of having to read a long poem.

  26. I notice that many of you don't like poetry because it's HARD!!!!!!!! I agree--but don't be afraid to challenge yourselves a little. There are some really great poems out there that aren't cryptic--you can easily understand and enjoy them. I will post one for our next blog entry!! Have fun!!

  27. I honestly like poetry. I think it's one of the best ways to express yourself, bedsides visual art of course. You can spill your thoughts and emotions on paper and only you can really know what it's about, but at the same time you give some people an idea of what is going on in your unique mind and you are also confusing a few people. I think that most people don't have an opened mind to where they can understand what the poets are trying to get threw to them. I think that they try to hard to understand what it means they miss the point of why it was written. Yes I think most poetry is hard to understand but thats the point of it. Only the poet their self knows EXACTLY what the poems they write mean. And the whole thing about how men used to write poetry back in the day for the women they love, and men today don't is because men now a days see the gushy romance and sensitivity as a weakness. They harass and tease those who actually show it by calling them weak and homosexuals. But some of them just are too focused on other things that they don't have time to write poetry, or they just aren't that expressive. But some guys do still write poetry and raps for their object of affection. I do love poetry and I think if some of you give it some time and look at the poems then you would understand them.

  28. I honestly don't care much for poetry. I don't read it outside of school and I don't write poetry. Thats not to say that if a guy were to right me some form of a poem that I wouldn't like it because I would, but thats not the way men or the world is these days. The morals and the way peoples mind set are have changed and are more of well I'll tell you I like you, now can we date?

  29. I don't usually like poetry for multiple reasons:
    1. It drags out a point when the point would be more strongly made with a phrase.
    2. It's unnecessarily emotional or has too much detail
    3. Many poems are quite simply NOT POETIC.
    4. A GOOD POETIC poem should include some sort of irony or sarcasm.
    5. They usually just aren't enjoyable to me, either because they aren't intellectually satisfying or because they aren't humorous.
    6. I dislike anything having to do with mundane life, which makes up a large percentage of literature as it is.
Not trying to be negative, just giving reasons.

  30. I was reading The Last Operative, big surprise there I'm reading a book about spies. I love them they are my favorite type of book to read. As far as I know there it was not made into a movie, not many christian books are actually but still i'm pretty sure it wasn't. I am torn on wether I like books or movies better, movies I can see everything right there in front of me and I can understand it. With books if it's written good enough I can picture almost all of it in my mind but the pictures don't flow in my mind like a movie does. I like to be able to see things. On the other hand books are almost alway better than movies because most people read the book first and get the images that they want ingrained in their mind only to watch the movie and get disappointed. I think that's changed because people don't have those words anymore, the poet like shakespeare could take words and make them mean whatever they wanted them to and they would and it would be great! They were amazing with words back then, I think people just don't care enough anymore to write poems, almost as if people have less emotion.

I love poetry, it (to me) is one of the most interesting things to read. Robert Frost and Shel Silversteen, Shakespeare all very good poets. I wish I could write poems like them, good ones that people will remember for a long time. I think poetry is the least appealing to young adults because a lot of it is hard to understand I won't lie, but if you try and understand it or just keep reading it, you're either going to understand enough of it to get the jist of it or you will find what it means to you and that can often be even better than what the author was saying for themselves because it's personal.
